El nombre habría sido el de un francés que había abierto su tienda fuera de Francia pero cerca de la frontera. La ubicación geográfica de Colonia olía a libertad política: Marteau evitaría la censura de Francia publicando fuera de Francia; Colonia prometió el acceso al mercado europeo y la posibilidad de que una buena parte de la producción se volviera a Francia, donde se vendería en el mercado negro.
